An Age of Peace[/b]
50 Years before the beginning of our story, the world experienced a period of peace and prosperity. The five Great Villages co-existed peacefully, trading and learning with each other. Uchiha Itachi, the Hokage of Konoha, had led his village well, bringing it into a golden age of growth and happiness. Hoshigaki Kisame, Mizukage of Kirigakure had managed to form a strong bond between the two villages, a bond that formed the basis of the original peace agreement between the five villages. The Tsuchikage of Iwagakure, a man known simply as Deidara, being good friends with the Hokage, joined the alliance mere weeks after its formation. The other two great villages followed soon after. However this peace was not meant to last..
The Beginning of the End[/b]
Unknown to the rest of their respective villages, every one of the Kages were part of an organization known as Akatsuki, a group bent on dominating the world. They had managed to get five of their best members asserted into these positions of power in order to start a new great shinobi war. Itachi, having always been the most subtle in the group, began their plan, sending out numerous ANBU squads to sabotage Iwagakure. While many people questioned this unprovoked action of violence, the Hokage convinced the clueless masses that it was in the village's best interests and so the attack went unquestioned. Deidara, pretending to not know the origin of these attacks, deployed several of his own ANBU teams to Kumogakure, destroying several important government buildings.
These attacks continued for some time, always escalating before finally, one village cracked. Deidara, having been ordered to do so by the mysterious leader of Akatsuki, declared was on Konoha. As Konoha had an agreement with Kiri, Kisame was forced to declare war on Iwagakure. Unfortunately, Iwa also had an alliance with Kumo, meaning Kumogakure was quickly drawn into the war and within days, the world was thrown into a world war...
The Rise of Akatsuki[/b]
Every village felt the full effect of the war. Regular people were no longer safe outside the walls of their village, bringing all trade to a halt. Diplomats were assassinated before their first rest stop, making a peace agreement impossible while at the same time, creating more reasons for the war to continue. Then, when their villages needed them most, the Kages vanished, disappearing off the face of the Earth. Then nearly an entire year later, they returned only they weren't here to assist their respective villages. Instead they returned dressed in the black and red cloaks of Akatsuki, leading an army twice the size of any village. This new enemy destroyed all they came into contact with, showing no mercy or remorse.
After already being weakened by the war, the five Great Villages gave little resistance against the ravenous armies of Akatsuki. Then on a dark night, exactly ten years after the arrival of the Akatsuki, the Great Villages had a meeting. They decided to join forces in the face of this common enemy, to put aside their petty differences for the common good. And so, they fought one final battle against Akatsuki to determine the fate of the world. Using the combined forces of their villages, the Alliance of Five managed to defeat Akatsuki, but it was a bittersweet victory. Heavy losses were sustained by every village, reducing their military strength to less than 30%. With this reduced strength, no village saw any reason to continue with the war and so, a truce was declared...
The Calm Before the Storm[/b]
Forty Years after the end of the Shinobi World War, the truce once declared still stands. New Kage have been chosen and life has pretty much returned to normal. The villages co-operate with each other although everyone can sense the tension between the villages. While most people remain convinced that Akatsuki has been truly defeated but some people remain uncertain. Even now there are whispers floating around that shadowy figures have been spotted on the outskirts of various villages, figures that look vaguely familiar to veterans of the World War. With the appearance of these new figures, the tension between villages have risen again, with everyone all too aware of the volatile relationship the villages have with each other. All it needs is one spark and the whole thing erupts...
